Pérez-Gómez, A., Cardozo, F. & Salcedo, L. (2018). Association between the abuse of psychoactive substances and health disorders of Colombian problem drug users: phase II. International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction. DOI: 10.1007/s11469-018-9881-0.

A sample of 899 Colombian adults was studied, of whom 606 were problem drug users between 18 and 73 years of age and 293 were non-consumers between the ages of 18 and 60. All of them answered the questionnaire developed by Nuevos Rumbos Corporation to evaluate 12 categories of disorders, diseases, symptoms, or syndromes (DDSS) and life time, last year, and last month prevalence of consumption of nine legal and illegal psychoactive substances (PAS). Results showed that, with the exception of autoimmune disorders, there is evidence that the participants in the consumer group have a higher probability of reporting positive association with the evaluated DDSS, as compared to the non-consumer group. The strongest associations were found between the consumption of PAS and neurological, cognitive, hepatic, and pulmonary disorders. Additionally, significant relationships were found between some disorders and control variables such as sex and educational level.
